Liv Dress

As the heat starts to build with the arrival of summer, I’m feeling more excited about getting a bit of sewing done. I was so lucky this year to have found and collaborated with Needle and Thread Patterns on a few projects. I’ve loved everything that I’ve sewn so far so I was keen to try the Liv Dress. I was keen to try it because of the wide V-neck, the way the dress flares out and the curved hemline.

As usual, I was on the lookout for fabric when I came across the perfect linen cotton in the remnants pile at Spotlight. It was a great bargain price, but the downside was the narrow width, and I could only get 2.5 meters so I had to compromise on what I would include for this first version of the dress. I’ve left off the belt and the pockets but to be honest, after finishing the dress, I felt that it was no compromise at all. I love it as it is and I’m seeing myself wearing this day to day and to the beach. I’m already planning another one because I haven’t taken it off since I finished making it a couple of days ago.

The sizing guide was great. Again, Mia highlights the measurement that you should pay attention to which helps to take the guess work out. I decided to make the Size 42 for my measurements of 38-inch bust, 33-inch waist and 40-inch hips. I didn’t make any modifications and feel that it fits well and is true to size.

The Liv Dress is quite versatile, and the look will change according to fabric choice. For this version, I have used a lightweight cotton-linen which is great for daytime casual wear. I have made a lot of dresses, but I am lacking in daytime casual clothing. I really want to make some fun pieces to flesh out my daily wardrobe pieces. Things that I can reach for and put a bit of joy in my day. I’ve heard the term dopamine dressing thrown around and I’m starting to understand what it means to have a piece of clothing that just makes your day brighter when you wear it.

Needle and Thread Patterns have great instructions included with the pattern. It is easy to follow and there has been a lot of thought and detail included in the pattern. One thing I’ve learnt to do is add seam allowances. I have found a great tracing tool so I’m no longer having to add my butcher’s paper. I have also been advised that usually the pattern pieces are traced onto the fabric directly then cut. I think that means that the sewing line is provided so it will improve accuracy. I think I still prefer patterns with seam allowances included because that’s how I learnt but it’s really not a big deal to add the seam allowance.

One thing I noticed about Mia’s designs is that the finishing is always so neat. I love the curved hem and was a bit worried about how I was going to make it neat. No problem because the hem is finished with a hemline facing. These details add the feel of luxury and design to the pattern. It another great pattern from Needle and Thread Pattern. It feels like an elevated shift dress.

Thanks for reading and happy sewing!
